Johnny Doyle recently announced he will be back for another year for Kildare footballers, and he spoke to Off the Ball tonight about his decision and his ambitions for the coming year.

With twins arriving shortly before the New Year Doyle was forced to seriously consider his inter-county career and he when speaking to Joe Molloy and Wooly he admitted it was not a straightforward choice, saying he had to think about it “from the point of view of family. Obviously [my] family has grown considerably over the last few weeks.”

Doyle insists that he still ha something to offer Kildare, saying: “In my own head anyway I feel that I have something to contribute.

“It’ll be no different to going back any other year.”

“I was very straight with Jason [Ryan] and, I suppose...as far as I was concerned if I was going back I was going back to make the team. Whether it’s your first year or your tenth year.”

At 37 yeas old Doyle knows he faces a battle to retain his spot at corner forward and he admits that, after watching the younger charges during last weekend’s impressive 2-19 to 2-18 win over Mayo in the league opener, he faces a tough task to get back into the side.

“Any competition is always good and you see some of the scores they kicked at the weekend you really feel you’re going to be really under pressure to get back there now.”
