Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in Ireland, accompanied by his wife Olena Zelenska, which will mark the first state visit by a Ukrainian leader.

He touched down at Dublin Airport shortly before 11pm last night after flying from Paris, where he held discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron.

A major security operation is underway in Dublin, with significant road closures expected throughout the day.

Political correspondent Seán Defoe spoke with Newstalk Breakfast, explaining that the public should expect visible disruption around Dublin.

“People will notice a lot of road closures in and around government buildings today, and also in Phoenix Park and around St. Stephen’s Green.

“The security is absolutely massive, they’re not taking any chances when he’s in town, ” he said.

This morning, President Zelenskyy will travel to Áras an Uachtaráin for a courtesy call with President Catherine Connolly before making his way to government buildings for a press conference with Micheál Martin and to address the Oireachtas.

Cabinet set to approve a series of supports for Ukraine

Sean noted that ministers are preparing to sign off on “some pretty significant measures."

Among them is an additional €100 million in non-lethal aid between now and 2030, part of a new Ireland - Ukraine cooperation road map.

There will also be a further €25 million to support Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

“That extra funding is aimed at helping Ukraine get through what is expected to be another bitter winter,” Defoe explained.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee will also seek approval for Ireland to participate in a new international commission focused on securing resources from Russia.

The framework is designed to identify and extract Russian assets to contribute to Ukraine’s reconstruction.

“Ireland wants to be part of that process,” Defoe said.

Zelenskyy is expected to depart later this evening, with further Garda restrictions in place around Dublin Airport.
