A six-year-old girl was rescued at sea by the Dun Laoghaire coastguard in south Dublin yesterday evening.

Emergency services were at the scene off the east pier at roughly 8.20pm.

Video footage shows three RNLI volunteers rescuing the young girl, who appeared to be unresponsive, from the treacherous waters.

The girl was taken to hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

RNLI operations manager Ed Todderdell said their rescue team navigated difficult conditions - getting into the water in just six minutes to bring the young girl to safety.

"Andy Hayes on helm, and we had Garry Hayes and Alva Smith. Not only that, but there's a whole backup that goes with it, down at the station we had lots of people who were ready with first aid kits, blankets, when the boat came back in with the little girl on board," he told Newstalk.

"The team could transfer her very quickly, get her into the warm, and our own team could start basic first aid while the fire brigade arrived about two minutes later."

A status Yellow wind warning had just expired when emergency services attended the scene.

A Yellow wind warning remains in place for Donegal, Mayo and West Galway until 4pm today.

The volunteers have been praised for their swift action, with Fine Gael TD Jennifer Carroll McNeill thanking them “their extraordinary efforts on behalf of this individual and their family, and on behalf of our community”.
