A young boy has drowned after falling into a river in county Kildare.

The 13-year-old and another boy and girl - fell into the Lyreen river beside the Kilcock road in Maynooth - at around four o'clock this afternoon.

One of the boys managed to get to land and raise the alarm - and all three were rushed to Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin.

The teenager was pronounced dead at the hospital.
