Ireland's diverse range of marine life was on show this week, as one lucky cameraman captured footage of basking sharks off the coast of Donegal.

Bren Whelan of Wild Atlantic Way climbing was on hand with his camera when a huge group of basking sharks began to breach the surface of the water near Inishowen.

Speaking to Independent Travel, Whelan stated that he saw over 300 sharks, and that "at times the same shark would breach repeatedly, between two to four times in a row - which is completely unheard of".

The basking shark is one of the largest fish in the ocean, and can grow up to 10 metres in length. However, they feed on plankton and aren't equipped with very sharp teeth, so they don't pose any significant threat to humans.

Whelan added that this video is all the more amazing because of its unique nature, saying "there is hardly any footage of them engaging in this type of behaviour and to date no footage of this quantity or quality has been captured in Ireland or around the world".
