A well-known theatre in Cork has suffered severe damage following a fire this morning.

Firefighters tackled the blaze from 8am at the Briery Gap Theatre in Macroom, described as the heartbeat of the mid-Cork market town.

There was nobody injured during the incident at the theatre, which was unoccupied at the time and houses a library, cinema and theatre.

It is believed that there is extensive damage towards the back of the building as well as the changing rooms.

Units from Macroom, Millstreet and Ballincollig fire stations attended the scene and brought the blaze under control.

Macroom Gardaí were also present along with a local ambulance crew, the Evening Echo and Southern Star reported.

Speculation is that the fire may have been caused an electrical fault and a full investigation into the cause of the blaze is ongoing.
