Around 6,000 homes remain without power following the storms last night. The majority are in the south west of the country.

A number of roads are also impassable due to flooding and motorists are being advised to drive with extreme care.

The worst affected areas are in counties Carlow, Kilkenny, Tipperary and Cork.

The winds and heavy rain are starting to ease, but Evelyn Cusack of Met Eireann is warning another storm is on the way.

Meanwhile Eircom says they have approximately 10,000 faults on their network.

But the telecoms and internet provide has warned there could be up to an additional 10,000 faults in the coming days.

"Of the current faults on our network over 70% of reported faults are less than 5 days old. Both broadband and telephone services are impacted" the firm says.

The damage caused by the latest round of storms is mostly wind-related and has resulted in significant damage to overhead networks, particularly with falling trees taking down overhead telephone lines.

Worst-affected areas are Cork, Kerry, Galway, Mayo, Tipperary, Wexford and Limerick.

'Irish chances of EU flood funding improving'

The Minister for the Environment says Ireland will be fighting for some European relief funding after being battered by 'the perfect storm' in recent weeks.

Phil Hogan says we have seen an unprecedented weather pattern of high tides, wind and low pressure.

Local authorities have been told to compile reports on the problems in their areas and send them to the Minister, who will take them to the cabinet table for discussion next Tuesday.

The government is making millions of euro in funding available to help those affected by the weather. But there is also the prospect of some European funding in the pipeline.

Minister Hogan says the growing impact of the weather on more people around the country means our chances of getting the money have improved.
