Leo Varadkar has “spoken” to his partner Matt Barrett about his behaviour during the coronation of Britain’s King Charles.

The Taoiseach represented Ireland at the event in London and took Dr Barrett with him.

During the event, Dr Barrett posted a number of photos on his private Instagram account that were tongue in cheek.

“Holy sh*t I think I’m accidentally crowned king of England,” he captioned one photo from a car with a view of a throng of royalists on the Mall.

“Was genuinely half expecting it to shout ‘GRYFFINDOR’,” he said about the moment the Imperial State Crown was placed on King Charles’ head.

He also highlighted the position of Clerk of the Closet - whose job it is to present Bishops to the British monarch - and said he had, “had this job until my early 20s.”

The Guardian claimed there were “red faces in Ireland over coronation quips” and the Taoiseach said it would not happen again.

“Matt’s a private individual,” he said.

“[He is] my partner for over seven years now and it was some private messages sent to some friends on his private account.

“He never intended for them to go public but that happens sometimes.

“Look, we’ve spoken about it and I think it’s fair to say it won’t happen again.”

The Taoiseach and Dr Barrett were not the only Irish people to fly in from Dublin for the event; President and Mrs Higgins also attended, as did Dubliner Lucinda who said she was a “royalist” who was brought up to respect the British monarchy.
