Remains were discovered floating in a suitcase at the Grand Canal in Ardclough.
More body parts were later uncovered in the canal at Sallins by the Garda Underwater Unit.
It is believed Mr O'Brien - from Ballyfermot in Dublin - had been shot in the head before his body was dismembered.
