Two County Clare brothers have appeared in court to faces charges following the death of a Polish man in Ennis.

Michael Maughan of Stone Park in Ennis is charged with the murder of Piotr Nowakowski in the early hours of yesterday morning.

His 21-year-old brother Darren Maughan has been charged with the assault of another man during the same incident.

Giving evidence of arrest Garda Nadine Keane told Ennis District Court that she charged 39-year-old Michael Maughan with the murder of Polish man Piotr Nowakowski this afternoon. He made no reply and was remanded in custody.

31-year-old Mr. Nowakowski died from stab wounds in the early hours of yesterday morning after a row broke out at a party taking place in Number 15 Sandfield Mews in Ennis.

Also appearing before Judge Patrick Durkin 21-year-old Darren Maughan - a brother of Michael and also of 20 Stone Park in Ennis - was charged with assault causing harm to Declan O'Dea - who was treated for injuries at Limerick University Hospital after he was found wounded following the incidents yesterday in Sandfield Mews.

Darren Maughan was also remanded in custody. He and his brother Michael were both granted legal aid and due back in court on Friday.

A third man being questioned by Gardai investigating the death of Piotr Nowakowski has been released without charge.
