Donald Trump has left the White House for the last time as US President.

Mr Trump departed the residence at around 8am local time, several hours before Joe Biden officially becomes the next US President.

The outgoing president will give a farewell address at a nearby military base, before continuing to Florida.

His successor Joe Biden will be sworn in later this afternoon, along with Kamala Harris as Vice President.

However, Mr Trump will not be attending the ceremony.

While hundreds of thousands of people traditionally travel to Washington DC for inaugurations, only 1,000 people will be able to attend today due to COVID-19 restrictions.

There is also tight security and thousands of National Guard troops deployed in the city in the wake of the recent effort by Trump supporters to storm the US Capitol.

Overnight, Mr Trump pardoned 73 people and commuted the sentences of 70 others.

It included a 'full pardon' for his former adviser Steve Bannon, and another for rapper Lil Wayne.
