TikTok has announced plans for a second data centre in Ireland.

The video-sharing platform this morning said it was “at an advanced stage of finalising a plan” for the facility in partnership with a third-party service provider.

The new data centre will complement the facility at the Echelon Campus in Clondalkin that is due to go live later this year.

Meanwhile, the company is also planning to develop a third data centre somewhere else in Europe in the coming months.

In a statement this morning TikTok General Manager of Operations for Europe Rich Waterworth said European user data would begin migrating to the new centres this year.

“It's truly humbling to see how TikTok has become part of the culture and fabric of everyday life for people in Europe,” he said.

“We're committed to continuing to accelerate real-world opportunity for our community while striving to set a new standard in safety and security to maintain TikTok as a place that excites and entertains for years to come.”

There are around 70 data centres already operating in Ireland, with up to 40 more in the pipeline.

A CSO report released in 2021 warned that the electricity consumed by data centres in Ireland, increased by 265% between 2015 and 2021.

They accounted for 14% of Ireland’s overall energy use in 2021 – with Eirgrid warning that figure could rise to 30% by 2030.

TikTok has had a base in Ireland since 2019.

The company last year announced plans to create 1,000 jobs in Ireland, adding to the 2,000 workers already employed here.
