Condolences have been offered after two people died in a three vehicle crash in Gormanstown, County Meath.

Yesterday morning at 6.30 on the R132, a crash took place involving a car, a bus and a lorry

The two male drivers of the bus and the lorry were both pronounced dead at the scene.

While the female driver of the car, a woman in her 40s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A number of other people were also taken to hospital for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

On Newstalk Breakfast, Sinn Féin TD for Meath East Darren O’Rourke said his constituents knew something serious had happened when they began their commutes and encountered a number of road diversions.

“Then, over the course of the day, the details of why there were those road closures and diversions began to materialise,” he said.

“I think people’s worst fears were realised; a multivehicle collision involving heavy vehicles, numerous injuries and two fatalities.

“Two men that went to work yesterday morning and didn’t come home.

“It is a devastating tragedy and it comes so soon after recent tragedies on the road in that region in Meath, Louth, Monaghan and North Dublin.”

Deputy O’Rourke added that it was "absolutely devastating” for the families and their friends of those who died in the crash.

“On behalf of the whole community, those families are in our thoughts and prayers,” he said.

“We extend our deepest condolences to them; it is absolutely devastating in the run into Christmas.”

While the names of the crash fatalities have not yet publicly been released, Deputy O’Rourke said he knows the extended family of one of them.

“It is absolutely devastating for them and for both families involved,” he said.

Deputy O’Rourke continued that it was “deeply tragic” that the two men died on roads used by people in Meath every day.

“I know the local community and the communities where the two men are from will support the families at this difficult time,” he said.

“And I want to do that as a local public representative; I do some of the extended family and it’s a devastating loss.”

Gardaí have asked anyone who witnessed the crash to contact Ashbourne Garda Station.
