Some of the most stunning homes across Beverly Hills and Malibu are all thanks to Irish architect Paul McClean.

From an early age, he wanted to be an architect – but no one could have foreseen that his dreams would lead him to design multi-million celebrity dream homes.

“I always wanted to be an architect, since I was like four or five years old, my mother tells me,” he told The Anton Savage Show.

“I don’t know where it came from, there’s nobody in my family like that.

“Back in those days – in the Stone Age – you had to go on your bike to the library if you wanted to find [something out].

“There’s about three architecture books in the Coolock library and I had them on rotation.”

The houses Mr McClean designs are typically about 50 times bigger than the typical semi-detached family home.

“They come in all shapes and sizes, but generally big - I think part of the problem is that, obviously, you’re designing for luxury market,” he said.

“So, people have a long list of things that they require but in our office we tend to mostly design homes that are 10,000 square feet or a thousand square metres and upwards.

“They go all the way up to 100,000 square feet – so they can be enormous.”

According to Mr McClean, while his clients may have deep pockets, there is still a pressure to keep things within budget.

“It’s wonderful but people are expecting you to come up with something interesting, and I’m like, ‘Oh god, I can’t think of anything’,” he said.

“But we’re just trying to build on what we’ve done before, and I think one place where we’re very fortunate, we just do those certain style of very modern contemporary homes.”

Mr McClean will be taking part in this year’s Design Week Dublin, which will run from May 19th until the 25th.
