New Armed Support Unit for Dublin as part of response to gangland killings
A dedicated new Armed Support Unit is be established for Dublin, as part of a response to recent gangland killings. It will be made up of 55 garda officers and operate in addition to the Emergency Response Unit. This will be supported by an initial additional €5m to fund garda overtime.
Paul O'Connell announces his retirement from rugby
In a statement released on the IRFU website, O'Connell announced he was to step away from the game after suffering a hamstring injury during the World Cup last Autumn. O'Connell joined French giants Toulon before the World Cup and was expected to join up with the team after the World Cup. Although moving to France, O'Connell never featured for the side. In the statement, he thanked Toulon for their "understanding" along with former teams Young Munster, Munster, Ireland and the Lions.
At least nine dead, 100 injured after German train collision
An investigation has been launched after two trains crashed into each other on a single railway track in the German region of Bavaria. The passenger trains collided near Bad Aibling, around 40 miles southeast of Munich, at 6.48am local time. Several carriages overturned and the trains were left partially derailed and wedged into each other.
Assistant Garda Commissioner appeals for witnesses or information regarding Dublin shooting
Gardai are appealing for anyone with information on last night's shooting in Dublin to come forward. 58 year old Eddie Hutch Sr was killed when four gunmen entered his home near North Strand and fired a number of shots. Gardai refused to confirm this evening if they had been aware of any threat against the life of Mr Hutch.

TV3, in association with Newstalk, will host the first leaders’ television debate as part of its VOTE 2016 election coverage this Thursday, live on both TV3 and Newstalk from 9pm to 10.30pm. The debate will be moderated by Newstalk’s Pat Kenny and TV3’s Colette Fitzpatrick. An Taoiseach and leader of Fine Gael Enda Kenny TD, Tánaiste and leader of the Labour Party Joan Burton TD, leader of Fianna Fáil Micheál MartinTD, and leader of Sinn Féin Gerry Adams TD have all confirmed their attendance in this special four-way leaders’ debate.
