Satellite navigation companies, and the State, should be able to quickly fix errors on maps.

That's according to Fianna Fáil Kerry Councillor Breandán Fitzgerald.

He says the systems are sending drivers down unsuitable routes in rural areas.

He told Newstalk Breakfast there needs to be an easy way to fix this.

"I'm just looking for a system that could be put in place, that when errors like this occur they can reported and fixed quickly.

"I suppose the reason why I tabled this motion was because a poor driver of an articulated lorry tried to bring it over the Conor Pass about a month ago.

"The resulting problem was that the Conor Pass was blocked for the entire day.

"There's signs all along the route... to say there's height restrictions and weight restrictions for vehicles travelling over the pass.

"The sat nav kept on bringing the driver through the Conor Pass, or up the Conor Pass, until it came to a point where he could go no more".

'Shortest route not the most sensible'

Councillor Fitzgerald says many electronic maps also take people the most direct route, instead of the most suitable.

"What I'm looking for is just a simple system - either run by the Department of Transport, or the tech companies themselves - if there are routes like this being used, just because it's the shortest route it's not the most sensible route.

"It should not just be on you, the ordinary citizen - the State should intervene.

"If these tech companies are going to be causing problems like this, they should be answerable to the State rapidly.

"And not allow it up to... ordinary people, who will not get a response from the tech company".
