Swimming restrictions for three Dublin beaches have been lifted - but the ban remains in place at Sandycove Beach for now.

Prohibition notices were issued for four beaches along the Dublin coast in recent days.

Rainfall on Sunday and Monday led to waste water overflow at a number of treatment facilities and pumping stations in the bay area of south Dublin.

That's believed to have led to water quality issues at a number of bathing areas, leading to swimming bans at four beaches.

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council today confirmed that the bans have been lifted for Seapoint and the Forty Foot.

However, Sandycove Beach will remain closed for bathing for now, pending further test results expected tomorrow.

This afternoon, Dublin City Council confirmed that the ban has now also been lifted at Dollymount Strand.

In a statement, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council said: "Temporary bathing prohibition notices at Seapoint and the Forty Foot bathing areas have been removed today Thursday 27 June, following consultation with the HSE, as water sample results have come back showing clean water quality at these locations. These areas are now safe to swim.

"However, test results at Sandycove Beach indicated elevated levels of E.coli and enterococci and will remain closed pending results of additional water quality tests. Results from these samples are expected tomorrow (Friday)."

The council stresses that other beaches in the area, such as White Rock and Killiney Beach, remain open and safe for swimming.

Bathing prohibitions are expected to remain in place for the entire 2019 bathing season at Sandymount and Merrion beaches due to general water quality issues, unrelated to this week's bans.

The latest developments come amid expected high temperatures in the capital over the next few days.

Temperatures of 20 to 24 degrees are forecast for tomorrow, with a similar prediction for Saturday.
