Police in Sweden believe that royal jewels stolen in a daring daylight heist last summer may have been recovered.

The royal treasure, believed to be worth around 65m Swedish Kroner (€6.7m), was stolen in a daylight heist on July 31st last year.

The two crowns and a royal orb are pieces of funeral regalia that were originally placed on the coffin of Sweden’s King Karl IX, who died in 1611.

On July 31st last year, thieves entered the Cathedral of Strängnäs - a 900-year-old church around 80 miles from Stockholm - stole the jewels from an alarmed display and made off in a speedboat that was waiting at a nearby waterway.

In a statement this morning, Swedish police said "all indications" now suggest that the treasure has been recovered in the Stockholm area.

Investigators are "working intensively" to get the discovery 100% verified as the missing jewels. Police have pledged to release further information once they, "know for sure if it is the stolen regalia."

A 22-year-old man has already been charged and is facing trial in connection with the theft. A second man has reportedly been arrested but not charged.

The police investigation has so far focused on a criminal gang based in Stockholm.

Investigators said technical examinations are ongoing and police are looking for a number of additional perpetrators.
