With the loss of David Bowie still being felt around the world, this morning’s online unearthing of a little-heard recording that revealed a hitherto unknown talent – his skill at doing impressions.
Thirty years ago, when recording the theme song to the flop rock musical from Julian Temple, Absolute Beginners, at London’s Westside Studios, Bowie was taking a break. While fooling around in the recording booth, he started playing the backing track, and proceeded to sing it in a series of musical impressions, including Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, and Anthony Newley.
The unused recordings originally belonged to record producer Mark Saunders, who posted them on YouTube this morning. You can listen to Bowie’s brilliant impressions below:
