The success of The Force Awakens was never really in doubt, but the movie has reached another milestone as it recently surged past the $2 billion mark globally.
Only two other movies have passed this mark previously, Avatar and Titanic, but the first move of the new Star Wars trilogy does have a record that no other film has ever achieved.
Its takings in the U.S. box office reached $900 million, the first film in history to achieve that milestone.
On the back of the news, Disney stated that "the film’s achievements are truly astounding, and it’s our great honor to relaunch this cinematic galaxy not only for all the devoted decades-long fans but for a new generation who will keep the Star Wars legacy alive for many years to come".
While the movie has been hugely successful, it looks unlikely that it will be able to surpass the record set by Avatar or $2.78 billion worldwide, but could overtake Titanic in second place on that list, which earned $2.18 billion.
