100 jobs are to go in Sligo with the closure of the Elanco's Animal Health facility.

The company, which is a subsidiary of Eli Lilly and Co., announced the closure of its manufacturing facility as part of an in-depth evaluation of its global manufacturing operations.

Elanco's Communications Director in Europe, Maria Zampaglione, told Ocean Fm it was a difficult decision, and restructuring efforts that saw 24 jobs lost in June 2015 proved to be insufficient.

“With regards specifically to the Sligo site, unfortunately the assessment that has been done (has) shown that we have not been successful in establishing a competitive business model for the facility,” she said.

A number of staff will support product transfer and decommissioning activities throughout 2016 and into next year.

The company says a consultation phase will begin next month to assist workers.

Elanco supplies veterinary vaccines, mostly to the European market. The company today added that the closure of the plant has no effect on parent company Eli Lily and Co’s other operations in Ireland.
