The Health Service Executive says the number of discretionary medical cards issued has increased from 52,000 to 87,000 to date with further increases expected.

The HSE says Children with disabilities have been particularly targeted - to ensure that no child is denied access to necessary healthcare.

The process of applying for a medical card has been streamlined to make it as straight forward as possible, and the HSE says there is ongoing liaison with patient representative groups.
