Eamon Ryan has rejected calls to resign from Ryanair, following the appearance of another drone at Dublin Airport on Thursday.

Flights have been delayed six times this year because of the devices and Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary said the Government response has been woeful

“If this was somebody blocking a bicycle lane in Ranelagh, he would be on it before lunchtime,” he told Newstalk Breakfast.

“But if you want to disable our main airport, he will sit there having meetings, talking to stakeholders and producing memos.

“It is not good enough and if he is not prepared to tackle the issue, he should resign.”

Speaking to Newstalk, the Minister for Transport said he would not be following Mr O’Leary’s advice.

“I have no intention of doing that,” he said.

“My job is to serve the public interest and pull people together, making sure that our system, our authorities in the airport and An Garda Síochána and all the other officers of the State work together collectively in the public interest - that’s what we’re doing and that’s what my focus is on.”

Minister Ryan said drone technology is “evolving” but that there would be a solution in place “within a matter of weeks”.

“We’ll go [with a proposal] to Government on Tuesday,” he said.

“We’ll have specific mechanisms involving our airport, also An Garda Síochána and the aviation authorities… There’s an urgency to it because what’s happening with the diversion of flights is not acceptable.”

Flying a drone is illegal within 5km of an airport in Ireland.
