Richard Satchwell has been found guilty of murdering his wife Tina.
The 58-year-old sat with his hand under his chin and had no reaction when the verdict of guilty of murder was read out in Court Six of the Criminal Courts of Justice early this afternoon.
The body of 46-year-old Tina Satchwell was discovered under the stairs of the home she shared with her husband in October 2023, six-and-a-half-years after her husband reported her missing.
After her body was found, Satchwell told Gardaí his wife died in a struggle after she attacked him with a chisel.
The jury of seven women and five men returned the verdict after nine hours and 28 minutes of deliberations.
On Lunchtime Live, Newstalk’s Southern Reporter Jamie O’Hara said the verdict of the jury was unanimous.
“The sound of crying could be heard at the back of the court as Mr Justice Paul McDermott thanked the jury,” Mr O’Hara said.
“Today was the end of the fifth week of the trial at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin.
“The jury sat for 23 days and came to their decision at around 12.25 this afternoon.”
During the trial, Satchwell mostly kept his head down and did not look around the court much.
“There’s a little bench in front where the accused sits and he often used to put his elbow on that,” he said.
“He looked down during proceedings; he never spoke during the trial apart from entering a not guilty plea at the arraignment - that was on April 28th.
“He wasn’t called to give evidence and he generally sat quite still - he isn’t a figiter.
“He was always freshly shaved and kept his hair extremely short, basically, a buzzcut.”
Mr Justice Paul McDermott set sentencing for June 4th.
