Young people are being urged to make sure they're registered to vote ahead of the general election.

Almost 700,000 people aged between 18 and 29 are eligible to vote - including thousands who've turned 18 since last year's local and European elections.

The deadline for registering is this coming Wednesday, January 22nd.

Ahead of that deadline, young people are being encouraged to visit the CheckTheRegister website to see if they're already on the register.

Those who aren't can download the RFA2 form from the site - which then needs to be signed and witnessed at a Garda station, and returned to the local city or county council (either by post or hand-delivered) by Wednesday.

James Doorley from the National Youth Council (NYCI) said anybody who turns 18 by the polling date of 8th February is entitled to vote - adding that "time is of the essence" for those who aren't registered yet.

Mr Doorley explained: "There is still time, so we would encourage people to make every effort to get on the register

“For almost every election and referendum we get calls from young people who have missed the registration deadline and are disappointed that they cannot vote.

"We urge young people to make sure they are registered and not to leave it to the last minute."
