Major disruption is on the cards for rail users in the Greater Dublin region this weekend.

Irish Rail has announced the closure of two significant routes in and out of the capital will be shut for maintenance works.

On Newstalk Breakfast, spokesperson Barry Kenny said the disruption will take place throughout both Saturday and Sunday.

“The first one is Heuston, we’ve a series of works taking place between Heuston and Newbridge, along the line,” he explained.

“So, all routes operating to and from Heuston this weekend are affected.

“If you’re intercity, part of your journey will be bus transfers.

“Our commuter service between Heuston and Kildare and Portlaoise won’t be operating.”

Mr Kenny added that for impacted passengers there will be “limited” bus transfers.

Trains will also not run between Dún Laoghaire to Greystones in County Wicklow.

“This is work we had planned to do the first weekend in October,” Mr Kenny continued.

“But Storm Amy hit that weekend and we had to defer to this weekend.

“We’re doing a bridge replacement and a lot of work then on Bray Head.

“It wasn’t safe to do that work while that storm was ongoing.”

Passengers can instead use Dublin Bus and GoAhead to travel between the capital and the Wicklow town.

Mr Kenny also promised there would be no further weekend engineering work on the Dublin to Greystones line until 2026.

“We’ve had six weekends of works throughout 2025 that have affected that line,” he said.

“This is the last one - people will be pleased to know.

“But we’ve had a lot of works happening on line… It’s basically the safety maintenance that needs to happen of the rail network.”
