Bród, one of President Michael D Higgins' dog, has died.

The President's office said he and his wife Sabina are sad to confirm Bród passed away at the age of 11 years.

They said Bród - who's name meant 'pride' - was 11 years and two months at Áras an Uachtaráin, having arrived as a eight-week-old puppy.

"Bród was a very much loved dog by all that met him and he enjoyed meeting with the thousands of members of the public who came to Áras an Uachtaráin over the years," they said in a statement.

"He was probably one of the most photographed dogs in Ireland."

They said Bród will be missed by all in the Áras - particulary the President's two-year-old dog Misneach, who's name means 'courage'.

"[Misneach] has shared his space with Bród over recent months and was his constant companion, aware of Bród’s situation and very attentive to him," they said.

The Higgins family previously had Bernese mountain dog Síoda, who passed away after a short illness in September 2020.

Bród was regularly seen during engagements with Síoda and Misneach over the years.

The Bernese mountain dog was part of several receptions for guests at Áras an Uachtaráin - including European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, Olympic rowers Gary and Paul O'Donavan and most recently US President Joe Biden.

Bród, Sioda and Misneach have become celebrities in their own right during President Higgins' tenure as unofficial social media accounts have been set up in their names - attracting thousands of followers.
