Authorities in Norway have called off the search for a 92-year-old woman who had disappeared from an old folks’ home after she was discovered to have fled the residence to take off with her Swedish lover, an 87-year-old man.

The managerial staff at Vilberg old people’s home in Eidsvoll, located north of the Norwegian capital of Oslo, had raised the alarm with the local police force after nurses found the woman’s mobility walking frame abandoned in the car park.

But it was later discovered that she had made her way by car to Stockholm, 570km away, for a romantic tryst with her 87-year-old boyfriend.

Speaking to the local Eidsvoll newspaper, Janka Holstad, who runs the retirement home, said that the staff found the whole affair to be “a touching love story.”

“Imagine not being able to go on a romantic holiday just because you’re past 90. The lady did nothing illegal, but she caused some uneasiness for us, because she never announced she was leaving,” she added.

The woman has since spent almost two weeks in the company of her Swedish boyfriend, with whom she has maintained a long-distance relationship since she first entered the Vilberg old folks’ home. She intends to return to Norway over the weekend.
