Penneys has moved to reassure customers that a batch of faulty flip-flops – containing high levels of a cancer-causing chemical – was never sold in Ireland.
The chain’s parent company, Primark is recalling thousands of men’s sandals after they were found to contain high levels of chrysene.
Chrysene is often used in dark colour dyes – however it has been found to hold a carcinogenic risk to humans.
In a statement the company said: "With the safety of our customers and respect for the environment at the forefront of our minds we have taken the decision to recall this product and are therefore inviting you to return this item for a full refund."
The black, blue and khaki flip flops from the Primark Cedar Wood State range were on sale in stores outside of Ireland from the beginning of January until June 2nd 2017.
Primark has suspended orders for the footwear pending an investigation.
A spokesperson for the company said that it believes the risk to customers to be minimal.
