A Status Orange weather warning is in place for Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford, where there is a significant risk of flooding.
A Status Yellow weather warning has also been issued for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Louth, Meath, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford.
On Newstalk Breakfast, National Director of Fire and Emergency Management Keith Leonard said within impacted counties it is “really hard to be specific” about where there might be flooding.
“This one is interesting because it’s coming in from the east,” Mr Leonard explained.
“So, you may kind of see the rain running off down a different level and different rivers that it might normally affect.
“We could have flooding anywhere across that eastern and southern region today.”

All this, Mr Leonard added, will likely prove “very challenging” for local authority teams.
“They were out yesterday and they are out today to try and unblock those drains and to check cover,” he said.
“Flood defences on the Dodder are being activated.
“There are other flood defences… that local authorities are involved in in areas where there’s likely to be flooding.
“Really the key message here is the safety; for people who are driving, give yourself extra time, slow down. Don’t drive through floods.”

For anyone who does get into trouble, Mr Leonard urged them to ring 999 straight away.
“If you’re having a problem, someone will come and help you,” he said.
“Every minute you delay, you’re putting yourself in more trouble - that’s a key message as well.”
People who think their local area might flood can also request sandbags from the council.
