The coalition is being urged to implement its own programme for government and put more funds into helping older people stay at home.

The charity 'Alone' have launched their Home First campaign, and want funds moved from the Fair Deal Scheme towards providing supports for older people at home.

One-third of older people living in nursing homes could live at home, with the right supports.

Alone says cuts in services for older people mean more people are being put in nursing homes before their time.

Ireland currently has a ratio of six people to every older person - and by 2045, that will be three to one.

Joan de Fernay (95) lives alone, and has the help of a carer for an hour a day.

She explains why it is important for her to live at home.

Alone CEO Sean Moynihan says we need to have a conversation about ageing.
