A new traffic light system is coming into effect on part of the Luas line in Dublin today.

The first automated Red Light Camera System will go live this morning at the junction of Blackhall Place and the Luas Red Line.

Motorists breaking red lights there will automatically receive three penalty points, and a fine of up to €120.

If successful the scheme could be rolled out in other parts of the country.

Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe TD launched the new system this morning, which forms part of An Garda Síochána’s camera based driving offence enforcement.

Minster Donohoe spoke to Jonathan Healy on Lunchtime about the new system. He said that there are now between 35 and 38 incidents taking place involving a Luas carriage and another road user every year.

He explained the new system was put together by several groups who came together to find a fresh way to tackle safety at junctions.

He also warned that cyclists who break red lights may find themselves slapped with fixed penalty notices.

Videos of an accident and near miss after drivers broke red lights have been released to illustrate the dangers of breaking lights at Luas junctions:
