The screening which is already available privately, but could soon be offered on the public health service in Britain.

The test involves analysing small bits of DNA in the mother's blood, rather than taking fluid directly from the womb.

Penny Green from the charity Down's Heart Group thinks it could eliminate the need for the old test - known as an amniocentesis - altogether.
