A cancer survivor has said being given a quote for mortgage protection 10 times what her friends are paying means she is being “penalising for something you have no control over”.
Konstantina Kalliontzi was diagnosed with non-Hodgkinds Lymphoma six years ago and, after four months of treatment, was told she was in remission.
Since then she has been healthy and spent much of her time saving for a deposit.
On Lunchtime Live, she said medical history was of huge importance to insurers.
“To be honest, I spoke with a few mortgage providers to just try and get the financial aspect of things secured and they all told me it won't be an issue,” she recalled.
“And then came the conversation around mortgage protection, I was only given a quote by one provider and that was €290.”
Ms Kalliontzi that it was a “lot of money” and her friends who had not survived cancer were paying much smaller sums.
“When I talk to my other friends who have houses who are around the same age as me or a little bit older, their quotes are like 10 times less than mine, you know, maybe €25, €30 per month for a house,” she said.
“I feel like €290 is just a quote that is penalising you for something you have no control over.”
