Meath's most decorated GAA player has appealed for the return of his All-Ireland winning medal, after it was stolen from his parents' home.

Martin O'Connell's medal - which he was presented with after Meath's victory against Cork in 1987 - was taken during a burglary at the house near Kells, Co Meath last week.

An antique ring, a watch and a Golden Jubilee commemoration medal were also stolen.

Speaking on The Pat Kenny Show, Martin said the medal and other items are of "enormous sentimental value" to his family.

He said the burglary happened on Tuesday evening while his parents were in their house.

He said: "The burglars come in through the front-room window. My mother and father were in the kitchen. They never heard a thing.

"My brother came home around 7:15pm and saw what had happened. He raised the alarm then."

Martin said he'd given the medal to his mother on a chain as a birthday present, while his grandmother's wedding ring was also taken.

He explained: "It's tough on [my parents]. My mother is 84, my daddy is 91... they didn't need that.

"But look... it could have been a lot worse... they didn't know anybody was in the house, and they weren't confronted by anybody."

He said lots of 'blood, sweat and tears' went into winning the all-Ireland medal, and his mother has always planned on passing it back down to Martin's own daughter.

Appealing to those responsible, he said: "If [they're] maybe listening in... leave it somewhere, just [so we can] get it back. My mother's ring... it would be great to get it back as well.

"You never know what might happen. It might turn up somewhere down the line, in a week's time, ten days time, or six months' time."

He said the stolen items are very important to his mother, but probably 'aren't valuable to nobody else'.
