The Independent TD Finian McGrath has resigned as Chairman of the Dáil Technical Group.

Mr. McGrath had said last week that he would ‘consider his position’ as head of the grouping if fellow Independent Mick Wallace was allowed rejoin it.

While the group had initially refused Deputy Wallace re-entry it was unclear if that had legal standing.

In a statement this evening Deputy McGrath said “Quite frankly, I am completely fed-up with the actions of Deputy Wallace who is distracting people from the real political issues of this Country”.

The Dublin Bay North TD went on to say he was “appalled at the procedures in Dail Eireannwhich rules force a group of Independent T.D.s to have a member that the vast majority don’t want”.

Mr. McGrath continued “Deputy Wallace agreed to withdraw from the Technical Group and now wants back. He showed a complete lack of respect to his Independent colleagues”.

The Deputy also thanked the rest of the Technical group for their support while he was chairperson.

He concludes that he will make his final decision on his membership after the ruling by the Ceann Comhairle.

Mr. McGrath has been hugely critical of the admission by Mr. Wallace of evading VAT.

Whip of the group Catherine Murphy says while she is not happy either their hands are tied.
