Police in Northern Ireland have issued an appeal over a “paramilitary-style” attack that saw a man shot in front of his young son in Belfast.

In a statement, the PSNI said three masked men carried out the attack at a home in the west of the city last night.

Detective inspector Kerry Brennan said the man, aged in his 40s, was shot in both ankles.

He said police arrived after the young boy ran to his neighbour’s house to raise the alarm.

“This was a brutal attack which occurred in the man’s home while his young son was present,” he said.

“This young boy was placed in a reprehensible situation and has been left traumatised by the vicious and merciless actions of these thugs who hide behind masks.

“This is nothing short of emotional and psychological abuse of a child.”

He said the attack should be “condemned by all.”

“Those who are involved in these attacks do not represent the interests of this community, nor do they contribute anything to it,” he said.

“They do it to try and exert influence or gain control of those they claim to represent.

“No-one has the right to violate others.”

He said police are working to establish a motive for the attack.

Police are calling for anyone with any information contact them.
