A man has been found guilty of stabbing a father-of-one to death outside his girlfriend's home in north Dublin. Andrew Gibney (21) of Drumheath Avenue in Mulhuddart has been jailed for life for murdering Gerard Burnett (28) on August 21st 2012.

He shook his head when the 10-to-2 majority verdict was delivered by the jury after four and a half hours of deliberations.

Gerard Burnett's family chose not to give victim impact evidence.

During the trial, the Central Criminal Court heard evidence that just before midnight on August 20th Gerard Burnett answered a knock at the door of his girlfriend's home at Castlecurragh Vale in Mulhuddart.

There was a flash of a knife and Mr. Burnett was dragged out of the house by a gang of five men and stabbed up to 30 times.

He suffered fatal blows to the heart, right lung and liver and was probably dead before his arrival by ambulance at Blanchardstown Hospital.

One week later, Andrew Gibney turned himself into gardai - but while he admitted drunkenly stabbing Gerard Burnett three times, he said he had never meant to kill him.

He called it a 'stupid drunk night'.

Lawyers for the State argued drunkenness is not a defence to murder and that the attack had been premeditated.

The jury heard there was history between the men. Gerard Burnett had stabbed Andrew Gibney in the shoulder with a screwdriver four years earlier, but the pair had made amends.
