A man in his 40s has been hospitalised following an incident involving several armed men in a boxing club in Roscommon.

Gardaí were called to Castlerea Boxing Club during yesterday's National Boy 4 Boxing Championship quarterfinals after several armed men with sharp weapons entered.

A man in his 40s received medical treatment at the scene and was later sent to Galway University Hospital for treatment for serious injuries, believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) has condemned the incident, calling it “abhorrent”.

“That such an incident could occur at a children’s sporting event is abhorrent and is roundly condemned by every member of the Irish boxing family,” it said.

The IABA suspended the remainder of the U14 national championships, which were due to conclude over the weekend.

Gardaí investigations continue.
