A man has been arrested after three Garda cars were rammed in an incident in Cork.

A van containing several people, including children, was reported driving erratically on the M8 on Wednesday night.

The van failed to stop and proceeded to ram a Garda vehicle.

A short time later the van stopped, but when Gardaí attempted to talk with the driver, the Garda vehicle was rammed again.

Two additional Garda vehicles arrived at the scene and attempted to block the van.

Both of these vehicles were also rammed.

Following an operation involving more Garda units, a stringer device was used at Cars Hill and the vehicle was brought to a halt.

A man aged in his 30s was arrested and taken to Bridewell Garda station.

He is being under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The other people who were in the van at the time were later taken to Cork University Hospital (CUH) to be assessed.

No serious injuries have been reported, while two Garda members attended CUH to receive medical treatment.

Gardaí say "extensive damage" was caused to two Garda vehicles, and three other vehicles received minor damage.

Anyone with any information in relation to this incident, or video footage, is asked to contact Anglesea Garda station on 021-452-2000, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800-666-111 or any Garda station.
