A new poll has found that the majority of UK citizens do not approve of the Brexit policy being pursued by Downing Street.

According to the poll carried out by Sky, some 52% disapprove of the plan - agreed by the British Cabinet at Prime Minister Theresa May’s Chequers country estate in July.

According to the data, most Britons would prefer a closer relationship with the EU than the one being put forward by Mrs May.

Just 18% said they approve of the deal - while 30% said they do not know.

The Chequers deal would see Britain continuing to observe EU rules on goods – but free to decide most of its own rules regarding services and immigration.

The plan led to the resignation of former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Brexit Secretary David Davis.

Mr Johnson claimed the UK risked becoming an EU ‘colony’ – forced to follow European rules without any input into their creation.

Mr Davis meanwhile warned that the plan was “unworkable.”

The EU has also voiced its concerns with the plan, with chief negotiator Michel Barnier warning that he is "strongly opposed" to key parts of the plan.

Speaking to German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung he warned that the proposal for a “common rulebook” for goods would threaten the future of the EU.

"The British have a choice,” he said.

“They could stay in the single market, like Norway, which is also not a member of the EU.

“But they would then have to take over all the associated rules and contributions to European solidarity.

He said allowing Britain to cherry-pick which rules it follows would lead to “serious consequences.”

“Then all sorts of other third countries could insist that we offer them the same benefits,” he said.

“That would be the end of the single market and the European project."

According to the Sky poll, some 46% of British people want closer ties with the EU than that proposed in the Chequers plan – 34% said they wanted “much closer” ties while 12% said “slightly closer.”

A total of 33% said they wanted looser ties – with 25% calling for “much looser” and 8% calling for “slightly looser.”

Some 8% said they felt the plan got it about right.
