Harry Potter fans have succeeded in redirecting an international powerline worth hundreds of millions of euro after complaining the original route would desecrate the burial site of Dobby, a fictional elf.

The path for the GreenLink interconnector was moved away from the ‘grave’ after “hundreds” of Harry Potter fans contacted the company in charge of the power line.

The site comprises rock arrangements dedicated to ‘Dobby the House Elf,’ a character in the Harry Potter movies, and became famous after the character died and was buried in the spot.

On The Claire Byrne Show, CEO of GreenLink James O’Reilly said the route for the powerline would now travel under the site, leaving no visible impact on “Dobby’s grave.”

Mr. O’Reilly admitted that there were several reasons for the changed route, but that “the fact that it was Dobby’s grave was one of those considerations.”

He said that there were “hundreds of responses from Harry Potter fans” to move the powerline connecting Wales to Wexford but that “there is a lot more to it than that.”

Mr. O’Reilly said that the online consultation the fans responded to was carried out during a “very early stage in the project” and that the final route had not been chosen.

View that Dobby’s grave was the main instigator of route change “not entirely true”

Mr. O’Reilly said he was surprised how attached fans were to Dobby, whose ‘grave’ he described as “basically a collection of stones and memorabilia that fans go to.”

However, he argued that the company was “more concerned with minimising the project’s impact on the local environment and the local community,” and not with Harry Potter fans.

Responding to a BBC headline stating, “Harry Potter fans forced diversion of UK-Ireland power link to avoid Dobby’s grave,” Mr. O’Reilly said the description was “not entirely true.”
