Love is in the aisles at a Galway Tesco branch after a worker got down on one knee and proposed at the cash register.

Michael Ward was determined to surprise his girlfriend, Sandra, and decided she would never expect him to propose at Tesco’s Oughterard branch on Valentine's Day.

With that in mind, he began to plan his proposal.

“I was talking to my manageress Patty and I told her what I wanted to do,” he told Lunchtime Live.

“I was going to ring Sandria and tell her to bring me down something, so I could get her in the store.

“My manageress Patty came out and she goes, ‘If that was me, I would kill you.’”

Patty pointed out Sandra would likely want to wear something special if she was getting engaged and suggested he ask her to dress up.

“I told Sandra that Tesco was having a promotion for St Valentine’s Day,” Michael said.

“They want a picture of a couple buying some flowers and some chocolates - all of that stuff.

“So, you need to doll up a little bit.”

Sandra said she was a bit grumpy about being asked to dress up – but her mood soon changed when Michael dropped to one knee by the self-checkout tills.

“I thought it was all a joke,” she said.

“I said, ‘Are you having a laugh?’”

Yes or no?

Eventually, Sandra gave Michael the answer he was hoping for.

“It took me a while, I was in complete shock,” she said.

“I didn’t expect it at all.”

Shoppers were also quite surprised and Sandra said one lady did a “big, huge doubletake” when she saw what was going on.

Sandra said Michael had not told any of their family members about his plan.

“They thought it was lovely first of all,” Sandra said.

“But nobody had any clue, he hadn’t told anybody.

“They were very shocked.”

As for a wedding date, Michael said it would be within the next “three to five years”.
