Lionel Messi and the Argentina squad have arrived home to a hero’s welcome.

Today has been declared a national holiday with millions expected to take to the streets to celebrate the country’s third World Cup victory.

Thousands of fans lined the streets of Buenos Aires throughout the night in the hope of catching a glimpse of the team on their way back from the airport.

The team was greeted by fans, reporters and a live band at the airport, with captain Lionel Messi holding the trophy as the team disembarked.

They will now spend the rest of the night in the Argentine Football Association's training ground, before heading out into the city at noon (3pm Irish time).

They will celebrate the win with fans at the famous Obelisco de Buenos Aires in the centre of the city.

Thousands of fans have been celebrating in the city ever since the famous win on Sunday night – with many camped outside the training centre all day yesterday.

Sunday’s final has been described by many as the greatest of all time.

It is Argentina’s first win since Diego Maradona took them to the title in 1986.

"It's just crazy that it became a reality this way", Messi said, after his historic win.

"I craved for this so much. I knew God would bring this gift to me. I had the feeling that this was the one."

Among the players celebrating this morning is Alexis Mac Allister whose great-grandfather left Ireland to go to Argentina in 1868.

Some of his relatives who still live in the Donabate area of Dublin spoke to Newstalk yesterday.
