The leader of the Liberal Democrat party in the UK Jo Swinson is to step down after losing her seat in yesterday's General Election.

Ms Swinson lost her position as MP for Dunbartonshire East in Scotland to the SNP's Amy Callaghan by just 149 votes.

She had previously lost her seat in 2015 before returning again in 2017.

The Liberal Democrats must now look for a new leader for the second time this year, as Ms Swinson had been in the role since July.

Sir Ed Davey and Baroness Sal Brinton will be appointed as acting co-leaders of the party.

During her tenure, Ms Swinson asked her party to vote for the new early election, claimed she would be the next prime minister and pledged to revoke Brexit without a further referendum if she was in a position to do so.

She said she did not regret how the party ran their campaign in terms of Brexit by being the "unapologetic voice of Remain".

She said: "Giving people the chance to choose to stop Brexit, obviously it hasn't worked.

"I...am devastated about that but I don't regret trying."

The Liberal Democarts won 11 seats in this year's election, one less than in 2017.

Following the result, the leader of the SNP Nicola Sturgeon could be seen cheering as she celebrated her party's victory in the constituency.

Ms Sturgeon said that the Scottish people must now be able to have their say on their membership of the EU.

She said: "England appears to have voted to endorse the UK leaving the European Union.

"Boris Johnson may have a mandate to take England out of the European Union, he emphatically does not have a mandate to take Scotland out of the European Union.

"Scotland must have a choice over our own future."

She has already said she will seek a second referendum on Scottish independence at the earliest opportunity.

However, the Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said he will turn the request down.
