Homeowners will receive a letter in the post next week from Revenue telling them how much they owe in property tax. However if you think the amount is too high you can go back to Revenue with your own self assessed estimate.
Only half of the property tax will have to be paid by this July and those who do not respond to Revenue before the end of June will face stiff penalties.
Those who are self-employed or registered with ROS will not receive a letter in the post but will get an e-mail instead.
Deferral of payment
Last week the Finance Minister announced that those entering a new personal insolvency arrangement will be allowed defer payment of their property tax. Michael Noonan outlined the measure in the Dáil as an amendment to the tax before it comes into force on July 1st.
But the tax will have to be paid with interest, once the person becomes solvent again.
Other amendments to the property tax included no payment for those in pyrite hit-homes, until the pyrite issue is resolved and properties owned by charities.
And deferral of payment will be allowed for those dealing with the estate of deceased persons and those who can show extreme hardship.
Personal Finance Editor with the Irish Independent is Charlie Weston. He says there will be 6 payment options.
