Two men have been arrested after shots were fired at armed gardaí in Co Kildare overnight.

It happened at around 1am at Clonmoyle in Rathangan, while officers were trying to stop a vehicle.

Gardaí pursued the car and both men were arrested a short distance away.

The gardaí say they did not return fire and a firearm was also recovered at the scene.

No one was injured in the incident.

Both men are detained at Leixlip garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, and can be held for up to 72 hours.

The scene at Clonmoyle between Rathangan and Monasterevin has been sealed off - and local diversions are in place.
