The Taoiseach has given every child in Ireland a day off homework to mark National Confidence Day.

In a special video-message, recorded while in Washington DC, Micheál Martin said all children have to do to get off their homework is ‘do one kind deed’ in its place.

“There is so much we can all achieve if we believe in ourselves more and I am asking you to believe in yourself more today and every day,” he said. “To do your very best and to continue, of course, to enjoy yourself.

“I have been speaking to your teachers and they’re happy to let you off your homework for one day.

“All you have to do is one kind deed instead of your homework. That could be looking out for friend, looking after someone in your family … it’s up to you to choose

“So please, enjoy your day. Believe in yourself and your abilities and I want to thank you for all your hard work.”

His announcement came at the end of star-studded show produced by Starcamp and sent to every teacher in Ireland today.

The show features the likes of Rory’s Stories, Colette Fitzpatrick, Will Sliney and Keith Barry.

Starcamp Director Aideen O’ Grady told Newstalk that it comes on the back of a “harrowing two years” for children and parents alike.

She said a recent Starcamp survey found that almost 50% of parents have noticed a decrease in their child’s confidence over the pandemic.

Meanwhile 48% said they have become less social and 43% said they are experiencing new anxieties, fears and worries.

Confidence

Ms O’Grady said the Starcamp video is a “positive, uplifting, feel good offering that we hope will put fire in bellies, stars in eyes, self-belief in souls and smiles on little faces just when it’s needed most”.

“We now know that Confidence is what parents desire most for their children.,” she said.

“Confidence is a human right for every single child. It is the greatest building block for our next generation and we need to nurture it in them.

“Kids with confidence are more likely to try new things, think well of themselves, take pride in what they do and achieve and believe in themselves – invaluable gifts to take into adulthood.

“We don’t want the children of ‘COVID years’ to lose out. This universal show was created to begin a positive process of hope, encouragement, self-belief and give some real inspiration to every single child that tunes in.”

The video has been sent to every teacher in Ireland, with children also able to view it at home here.
