Jury in trial of a childminder accused of shaking baby fails to reach verdict

The jury in the trial of a registered child minder accused of shaking a baby in her care have failed to reach a verdict.

After a day and a half considering the case, the Jury told the Circuit Criminal Court that they could not reach a majority verdict and felt that they wouldn’t be able to with any more time.

Judge Patricia Ryan released the jury and directed them not to discuss the case with anyone.

During the trial, prosecutors alleged it was a clear case of shaken baby syndrome, the defense however claimed that the injuries were consistent with a head trauma and could have been the reaactivation of an old injury. 

Sandra Higgins from The Beeches, Drumgola Woods in Cavan town had denied intentionally or wrecklessly causing serious harm to the ten month old baby at her home on March 28 2012.
