Joanne McNally has revealed that she used to have a crush on Pat Kenny and still feels there would be a “vibe” if she met him today.

The comedian recently made history by becoming the first Irish person to sell out the 3Arena.

Extra show dates have been added for December, but speaking to The Claire Byrne Show, Joanne did not just want to talk about comedy.

“Pat Kenny, I was a child in the 80s in Ireland, [he was] the only man on the TV,” she recalled.

“It was only Pat Kenny. He was the only man on TV and he was in control of a lot of toys.

“And I mean, sorry now, if that's not hot. Do you know what I mean? The radio show, the Late, Late Show.

“And he's a gorgeous voice.”

She added that she still feels “there’d be a vibe” if she met him.

Starting out

Reflecting on her career as a sell out comedian, Joanna explained that it might never have happened had it not been for a personal crisis in her life.

While she “thoroughly enjoyed”working in PR as a young woman, she increasingly felt “something amiss”.

“I kind of spiraled off into an eating disorder and then had to kind of press pause on everything, which turned out to be the best thing in the world,” she said.

“One of those weird situations where, yes, it wasn't ideal.

“But also, life is funny and strange. And even the sad bits or the hard bits, you're like, I can't really change them because they're all a stepping stone to where I got.”

Afterwards, Joanne felt “free to make some choices” and decided PR was not for her.

In the end, she made a “wild pivot”, trying theatre and then standup comedy.

Having it all?

However, despite her huge talents, success was not something that just fell into her lap overnight.

“I worked very, very hard,” Joanne explained.

“I've made a lot of personal sacrifices.

“You know, I've no partner, I've no kids. I've put everything into this.

“You can have it all? No, you can't. I think we've come full circle now.

“We've realised that's just not true. You can't have it all.”
